What I do
Before starting, I examine the ear with an otoscope and ask whether you have had perforations, infections or surgery, as this changes how to proceed.
If the blockage can be removed safely, I remove it by rinsing with warm water, check the result and give you hygiene recommendations to help prevent it forming again. If there is pain, discharge or a suspected perforation, I do not rinse and recommend seeing a doctor.
